Game Setup Details:
Report:
We started about an hour late, at 9:55am. We took one very minor break for food. The game ended at 9:30pm, a bit longer than anticipated.
All players were familiar with the game so we bypassed the 10-minute introduction.
A lot of people took countries they'd never run before, so there was some unusual fumbling early in the game. I played Egypt for the first time to try and figure out how Egypt can survive in such a small area. Even 2/3 of the way through, when I finally got Egypt running in a fairly stable manner, I still couldn't understand how it worked.
The tenor of this game was unlike any other in the Quarterly Event's history. Tensions were high and people resorted to armed conflict far more quickly and frequently than normal. Halfway through the game there were three players with Military; by the end there were five.
Babylon used armed conflict repeatedly against Egypt early in the game until Egypt conceded to his border negotiations; Illyria went rogue about the time cities were starting to appear in sizeable quantities. By the end of the game, Illyria had attacked almost everyone in the game -- a strategy which is reflected in Illyria's paltry final score.
Illyria and Italy had enjoyed friendly borders and a preferential trading relationship for most of the game, but near the end, Illyria decided to attack Italy out of the blue, and so Italy responded by neglecting all cities, purchasing Military, and committing all resources to attacking Illyria, which is also reflected in Italy's final score. He did, however, chase Illyria almost completely off their side of the water separating Thrace and Asia's starting areas, and reduced Illyria to zero cities. On the final turn of the game, Illyria committed suicide attacks and reduced himself to zero population. On the last turn of the game, Egypt overcalamitized to get away from Civil War, which succeeded, and so Illyria ended the game with no cities, no population, and two boats on the board.
Lynn took Africa to victory, securing every Civilization card in the game, and upheld a long-standing tradition of African victories in the Mariner Quarterly Event. This was Lynn's first victory in Advanced Civilization.
Though megaphases were timed at 7 minutes, leeway was given for the movement phase given the number of wars going on throughout most of the game, resulting in a later run than anticipated based on the results of the previous Quarterly Event results. There had been hope for a second game, possibly of either Civilization or Advanced Civilization, but at 10pm the best that could be arranged was a game of Elfenland. Annie and K simply disappeared into the hot tub for several hours.
